Junior midfielder Najla M. scored her first career goal in the SJC red and white to lead her team to a 1-0 victory over visiting St. Pius X of New Mexico on Saturday, September 18th at Quinn Field.
Najla latched onto a header from sophomore Lis P. in the 12th minute and calmly buried her strike from six yards past the STPX 'keeper to record the game's only goal. The finish was the result of a long, arching corner from the right side that junior defender Allison S. hit to the back post where Lis was able to jump over her defender and re-direct the ball to the near post for Najla to deposit into the net for her first career goal.
SJC outshot the visitors from New Mexico 10-8 but conceeded two yellow card bookings in the 52nd minute that allowed STPX to challenge SJC 'keeper Kirsten G. from 25 yards. Fortunately, the attempt sailed wide right of the goal.
SJC kept its composure until the final whistle and preserved a clean sheet for the fifth time this season. SJC's Kirsten G. is among area leaders in saves, save percentage and shutouts.
With the victory, SJC improves to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in non-conference play. The week of September 20th features two important WCAC fixtures against PAUL VI (9/21, Home @ 4PM) and HOLY CROSS (9/24, Away @ 4PM).
